About US
CITAI-FABXR – Technological Interface Centre for Extended Reality and Advanced Fabrication is a transdisciplinary infrastructure at ISMAT, integrated with the Living Design Ecosystem and other Programs. It supports advanced work at the intersection of architecture, design, digital technologies, biodesign and sustainability.
Structured as an integrated infrastructure, CITAI-FABXR brings together extended reality (XR), spatial data capture, digital fabrication, biofabrication and biomaterials into a continuous experimental pipeline — from data acquisition and digital modelling to immersive simulation, material experimentation and advanced prototyping.
Through this approach, the centre enables practice-based research and interdisciplinary innovation, connecting academic knowledge with real-world applications across biodesign, circular bioeconomy and emerging technologies.

These labs integrate extended reality systems (Varjo and HTC), motion tracking technologies, high-performance computing and 3D scanning and UAV platforms. Together, they enable immersive simulation, spatial data capture, digital modelling and the development of digital twins and interactive environments.
Immersive Technologies Lab

Focused on advanced prototyping, this lab includes industrial and large-scale 3D printers, CNC machining and laser cutting systems, supporting additive and subtractive manufacturing processes from digital design to physical production and finishing.
Digital Fabrication Lab

Dedicated to biodesign and material innovation, this lab is equipped with bioprinting technologies, biomaterials processing tools and controlled growth systems, enabling the development of bio-based materials and experimental solutions aligned with regenerative and circular design.

Applied research Projects
The Living Design Collective develops applied research projects connecting biodesign, digital technologies and cultural heritage, in collaboration with industry and public institutions.
1 - Bioanchoring Systems – Marlagos
Development of bio-based anchoring solutions for marine contexts, combining biomaterials, circular design and real-world application.
2 - Museum of Portimão – XR & Digital Fabrication
Projects focused on 3D scanning, digital reconstruction and immersive experiences, supported by XR technologies and 3D printing for museum and tourism contexts.
3- Teia d’Impulsos – Inclusive Boats
Design and fabrication of inclusive solutions for boats using additive manufacturing, improving accessibility and user experience through design and technology.
